Horse First
Horsemanship
Our Philosophy
The foundation of our Horse First Horsemanship program is Cooperative Riding. It is a relationship-based approach that incorporates equine behavioral science and the biomechanics of riding. We implement techniques informed by principles of natural horsemanship and positive behavioral training in order to strengthen the bond between horse and rider. We believe that an empathetic connection with our animals works best.
Our Approach
Mounted instruction
Mounted lesson focuses on mastering technical riding skills. It is mainly a motor operation involving a centered positional stance of the rider’s body, ability for independent movement of each of the rider’s limbs, and an understanding of the horse’s movement and how the rider’s own motion affects the balance of the two entities. It requires practice and a keen awareness of how one’s own body attunes to that of the horse.
Unmounted instruction
Unmounted lesson involves developing “feel”, a more difficult concept to impart because it involves perception and judgement, which differs based on the situation, and more importantly, differs based on the temperament and experiences of the rider. Feel requires empathic sensitivity to the horse’s state of mind coupled with research-based knowledge of equine behavior in a natural environment.
